Art & Intuition: An Act of Will

William Faulkner: that’s an image of him from an old paperback copy of one of his novels. It may have even lost its cover somewhere along the line (IYKYK). I imagine I replaced the old pocket edition with a newer trade one sometime within the last ten years, so ripping pieces and pages out did not start as, or become, some sort of moral dilemma. How long ago did I make this little journal? Three, four years? Its leaves started life as wrapping paper, calendar pages, maps, envelopes, newspapers, journal pages, and painted papers. When I pulled it off a shelf last night, this two-page spread was nearly finished, but not quite. William’s side needed some red to make it cohere to the floral side, so I took care of that with a little more wrapping paper and a paint marker. It didn’t take long, but considering how full today has been, the amount of time spent on the endeavor was just right.
