If my bed were a racing car
And I were the driver in it,
I would travel the highways near and far,
Enjoying every minute.
When Mommy sends me to bed at night,
I would have nothing to say,
But start the engine and turn on the light
And happily speed away.
If my bed were the fastest plane
And I were a pilot in it,
I would race through the clouds like a hurricane,
Enjoying every minute.
When Mommy comes to send me to bed
She would get the biggest surprise;
I’d start the propeller—and over her head
Take off to the starry skies.
If my bed were a ship on the sea
And I were the captain in it,
I would sail to coasts of Highbarbary,
Enjoying every minute.
When Mommy tells me that bedtime is near,
I’d lift the anchor and sail.
I’d promise that I would be back in a year
And bring her the biggest whale.
There it stands, that nasty old bed!
Soon I will have to be in it,
And I so wanted to play instead—
Just for another minute!
Soon Mommy will come and kiss me good-night,
And read me a story or so—
But she sends me to bed, and that just isn’t right,
For I’m really grown up, you know!
