At 3 a.m., Dennis let Caddie out front, because it’s easier on her arthritic back legs (no long staircase to descend, as in the back of the house). There’s no fence in the front, however, and , in a matter of minutes, Caddie disappeared into the dark. We searched with flashlights. Dennis then got dressed and drove up and down the road: no sign of the delinquent dog. The temperature was 26 degrees. When I got up this morning, I checked the front stoop, but Caddie wasn’t there. I stepped out back and called her name: nothing. I took one more peek out front, and there she was, shivering and covered with snow. I was happy to see her.
